Gratitude Improves Who We & Others Are

As the holiday arrives tomorrow, you may be gathering with people you care about or settling into a quiet moment on your own. Either way, this pause gives you space to be grateful for all you have and all that is coming.

Of course any time of the year is a good time to express gratitude but there is something about this time of year that brings it a little more front and center. Research shows that gratitude improves mental and physical health, strengthens our relationships, increases our productivity, and so much more.

Gratitude literally releases "happy hormones" like dopamine and serotonin, therefore reducing stress and mitigating symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Studies even show that when people witness genuine appreciation, even if the gratitude is directed elsewhere, something in them relaxes. They become more open, patient, and willing to move with care. This response shows up in many settings, reminding us that gratitude is not only personal. It moves between people. It strengthens connection. It gives you a clear view of how much your life is supported by others.

This season also carries a history that deserves to be held with honesty. For Indigenous communities, this time includes stories of resistance, loss, and identity that stretch far beyond the holiday itself. Bringing that truth into your awareness adds weight to the gratitude you may feel. It invites you to honor the land you gather on and the communities who cared for it long before this day was created. Holding that with respect brings sincerity to how you move through the holiday and offers a fuller understanding of what gratitude can look like.

When gratitude meets awareness like this, it often shifts into quiet solidarity. You see what helped you through the year. You recognize who supported you. And you start to move with more intention toward others, because gratitude makes you want to give back what you received. In this way, thankfulness becomes an action, and action becomes connection.
